Not illustrated. 1857 Excerpt: ...the earth, and the ring may, in consequence, disappear twice before its plane has entirely swept over the terrestrial orbit." On the 22d of April, 1848, the earth passed from the bright to the dark side of the ring; the sun, then elevated two degrees above the bright or northern surface, was gradually diminishing its angle of elevation. On September 3d the illumination of the southern surface was first perceived, the earth at that date occupying an extremely small angle of elevation above the southern side. Both the earth and sun remained on the same side (the southern and illuminated side) for nine days. Between September 12th and 13th the earth again crossed the plane to the northern and unilluminated side, and recrossed it finally on the 18th of January, 1849. The following table gives the values of I and I', taken from the Nautical Almanac for 1848 and 1849; I representing the elevation of the earth above the plane of the ring, as seen from the centre of Saturn; 1', the elevation of the sun. The signs of these angles are positive when the earth and sun are above the northern surface, and negative when they are above the southern surface. I and I' have been computed from Bessel's elements, which have shown an excellent accordance with observation. By observations at Cambridge the first reappearance of the ring in 1848 took place between August 31.18 Gr. m. s. t. and September 3d.80; the second disappearance between September l'.SO and September 13d.62; and the final reappearance in 1849, between January 18d.47 and January 19d43. On the last date of observation, preceding the passage of the plane through the sun, August 31st, 14h m. s. t., by computation, about two and a quarter days before that event, the sun's upper limb was on the point of rising ...
